Uptown Theater
Located at 2240-2248 N. Broad Street, the Uptown Theater opened in February 1929 as a movie house and was designed by Louis Magaginer as a premiere venue for its time. The Uptown Theater’s distinctive Art Deco design continues to inspire young musicians of today. Jay Records, producer of hip-hop music, has used the facade for an album cover for one of its artists.
Uptown Entertainment and Development Corporation (UEDC), a community development corporation, owns the Uptown Theater. The UEDC has commissioned several feasibility studies for planned usage of the theater. Plans include artist lofts, office space, a restaurant and a performing arts space in the 50,000 square foot building. The Uptown Theater has been chosen by the Preservation Alliance for preservation as a historic building . Scribe Video has also chosen the theater as part of the precious places programs.
