THE REBECCA DAVIS DANCE COMPANY
LITERATURE AND HISTORY: ON STAGE & IN THE STUDIO
OVERVIEW
The Rebecca Davis Dance Company is a pioneering, not-for-profit cultural institution in Philadelphia. The mission of The Company is to utilize literature and history in tandem with the principles of dance and theater to impact the local community.
After the world premiere of Antigone at The Kimmel Center for The Performing Arts (March 2006), The Company opened its official training studio at 1802 South Broad Street on June 9, 2006 with Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown awarding scholarships to local students.
SERVICES
The Rebecca Davis Dance Company provides two core services: pre-professional training for dancers between the ages of 12-18 years, and professional dance-theater productions based on literary and historical themes. These creations combine original music, movement and speech to develop a new form of movement and expression.
This form of artistic offering is important to the Philadelphia region for two reasons: it retains, develops and employs performing artists in the city, and it defines Philadelphia as a destination center for dance-theater training and performance.
PREMIERE
In March 2006, The Rebecca Davis Dance Company produced a full-scale production that demonstrates literature on stage. Antigone, which debuted at The Kimmel Center for The Performing Arts, featured an international cast of 21 dancers from Philadelphia, New York, Toronto, and Russia. The creative process began when Artistic Director Rebecca Davis received a Fulbright scholarship to collaborate with The Saint Petersburg Conservatory and The Mussorgsky Ballet. Timofey Buzina, General Manager of The Saint Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, created the original score. The Philadelphia performances featured eight dancers from area high schools, integrating pre-professional and professional training and performance.
