Peter Nero and the Philly Pops
Launched in 1979, Peter Nero and the Philly Pops has become one of the
city's most enduring and beloved cultural institutions. Since the summer
of 1981, the Pops has performed for millions at the Philadelphia Museum
of Art during the city's annual July 4th fireworks festivities. In 1984,
the Pops made its New York debut at Carnegie Hall and revisited the legendary
venue as recently as May 1997. Peter Nero, who is a Grammy Award winning
pianist, was honored to receive the Governor's Award in Distinguished
Arts in the Fall of 1999. For the past 40 years, he has built an impressive
career as a composer, Pops conductor and arranger. He has received two
Grammy Awards and ten nominations and recorded 67 albums including the
million-selling "Summer of '42." Nero, along with musicians
from the Philly Pops, continues to reach young people through The Pops
Project , the educational program they present throughout the region.
