Academy
of Music
It's a jewel in Philadelphia's cultural life.
The historic Academy of Music is located on the Avenue
of the Arts at Broad and Locust Streets. As the oldest opera house in
the United States still used for its original purpose, it is renowned
as a National Historic Landmark. Built in 1857, the Academy of Music is
still one of the busiest auditoriums in the United States. It is the season
home of the Opera Company of Philadelphia, The Pennsylvania Ballet, as
well as “Broadway at the Academy of Music”, in addition to
many others.
In order to prepare for the 21st Century staging demands, this 2897 proscenium
stage auditorium began renovations in 1996. These exciting renovations
have been staged over several years without interfering with scheduled
performances. The overhaul of the stage and backstage area has resulted
in a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system with more improvements
still scheduled. The Academy is able to host large-scale Broadway shows,
touring groups and a full compliment of music, dance and opera productions.
The Academy of Music’s ballroom is a beautiful rental site for
social activities, meetings, small concerts.”
