Greater Philadelphia Cares
Coach a child. Create a future.
Help a struggling child become a Reading STAR
44% of public school children in Philadelphia read below basic grade level.
There is a solution in a volunteer-driven, evidence-based reading program called Reading STARS. Unlike other reading programs, Reading STARS works for virtually every child, every time. The reason it is singularly effective in moving a struggling reader to a fluent reader is that it is a built on a tangible structure that guides a child through the essential steps of this most basic skill. No one moves past a word or a page until complete comprehension is achieved. The results are measurable and dramatic. Since Greater Philadelphia Cares introduced this program in 2003, hundreds of children and volunteers have participated. The reading skills of those children have improved on average 2.4 grade levels in less than 40 hours.
Every child in Philadelphia needs to know how to read, and Greater Philadelphia Cares is committed to helping every child meet that challenge. Over the next year, 100,000 volunteers will be mobilized to coach 100,000 struggling readers. Over the past 13 years, Greater Philadelphia Cares has created an impressive network of our city’s stakeholders, including businesses, schools, community organizations, and active citizens. With Reading STARS, we’ve discovered a tool that empowers every resident to make a measurable, lasting, critical difference in the life of a child.
