Lunch, Music, Dance and Theater on the Avenue of the Arts
Avenue of the Arts, Inc. Announces Avenue Artists 2002

Philadelphia, PA ~ Avenue Artists are back on the Avenue of the Arts for another summer series of free performances. Musicians, dancers and actors will perform for passersby on Fridays at 12:00 p.m. from May 10 to June 28 on Dilworth Plaza, on the west side of City Hall.

While many rightly consider the Avenue of the Arts to be the place to go for a concert, an opera, see a ballet or a play, get great food, or visit an art gallery, the Avenue offers a much wider range of colorful and ethnically diverse activities, too often unsuspected. In that respect, this year’s Avenue Artists crop of talent is even more varied than previous years. Carnival drums and whistles will electrify the audience, swingy banjos will bring back memories of Django Reinhardt while jazz harmonies and classical melodies will put the audience in pre-weekend moods. King David’s Drummers, a world famous Israeli group whose distinctive musical experience is created using African drums and other percussion instruments, will stop their world tour to offer Philadelphia an exclusive and unique performance. Avenue Artists 2002 will also welcome dancers and actors for the first time ever. Anne-Marie Mulgrew and Dancers Co., a Philadelphian modern based dance company known for its comic inventions, powerful images and unusual collaborations is sure to surprise more than one passerby. Actors from the Philadelphia Black Theatre Festival are certain to trigger the interest of the audience by presenting a sample of the acts they will be performing during their festival.

As importantly, Avenue organizations from South Broad as well as North Broad Street will also be present during the weekly Avenue Artists’ performances to talk about themselves, their programs and services. Avenue of the Arts, Inc.’ s mission is to extend the vision and the boundaries of the Avenue of the Arts. From May 10 to June 28, Dilworth Plaza will prove to be an appropriate meeting point for those who believe the Avenue of the Arts stretches beyond City Hall.
