Praised for his “stunning originality” (The Huffington Post), Spanish choreographer Cayetano Soto will bring his work Schachmatt to BalletX for a company premiere at Spring Series 2017. Known for his highly technical and intense choreography, Soto has premiered work at such companies as Nederlands Dans Theater, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Ballet BC, and Aspen Santa Fe Ballet.
Soto will mentor BalletX’s 2016-17 Choreographic Fellow, Tommie-Waheed Evans, who has worked as both a principal dancer and artist-in-residence with PHILADANCO!. His work infuses jazz with classical dance, investigating themes of social justice and his own African-American culture. The company also welcomes the return of Matthew Neenan’s The Last Glass, which originally premiered on BalletX in 2010, and has since toured the country with performances most recently at the 2016 Vail International Dance Festival, World Music/CRASHarts at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art, and Portland Ovations, Maine. Taking inspiration from the wild street-parade sound of American indie-rock band Beirut, The Last Glass is a ballet that slowly awakens like a city, part mysterious pageant and part raucous celebration.
