| Philadelphia goes
French for three weeks (April 7 to May 1) 2011 with the
launch of the very first Philadelphia International
Festival of the Arts (PIFA), offering a slate of
programming featuring French artists from the City of
Light and beyond on the Avenue of the Arts.
One of the culminating
events of the Philadelphia International Festival of the
Arts is running a large-scale street fair. It will be held
on April 30, 2011, along Broad St, on the Avenue of the
Arts in Philadelphia, directly in the heart of the city
and running from approximately City Hall to the Kimmel
Center. The Festival itself takes its inspiration from
the artistic climate of Paris in the 1910’s. As the
entire interior of the Kimmel Center will be transformed
into a Parisian street scene during the Festival,
complete with a zeppelin, an 80-foot Eiffel Tower and
bistros, we hope to extend this aesthetic into the
actual streets, drawing inspiration from street art and
architecture of the period.
Vendors
will be selling food, drinks and other goods throughout
the day, and performances will be ongoing on two stages
at each end of the fair. French street circus artists
from Transe Express will be holding an elaborate
performance as the sun sets in the evening. We are
looking for an exciting and cohesive design for the
fair, considering, among other aspects, tent appearance,
signage, café-style seating areas, stage design and a
general evocation of the sights, sounds, colors and
smells of a grandiose public festival.
